The Majority caucus on the Appointments Committee has recommended the approval of all four deputy minister nominees vetted on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
The nominees were approved without the Minority Caucus, who staged a boycott of proceedings on the day.
The Minority staged a walkout following a disagreement between the Committee Chairman, Bernard Ahiafor, and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The Chairman overruled a question the Minority Leader asked Justice Srem-Sai, the Deputy Minister-designate for the Ministry of Justice.
He had asked him to demonstrate a dance, which was overruled by the Chairman. Afenyo-Markin accused the Chairman of being “whimsical” and “rudely interrupting” him. When asked to withdraw the comments, he refused, prompting the Chairman to abruptly end the vetting of the nominee.
After a ten-minute suspension, the Minority caucus returned but refused to support the approval of any of the nominees.
However, the Majority approved all of the nominees.
The nominees are Yussif Sulemana – Deputy Minister-designate for Lands and Natural Resources, Justice Srem-Sai – Deputy Minister-designate for Justice and Attorney General, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini – Deputy Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, and Yussif Issaka Jajah – Deputy Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.
