G/A: Some criminal minds have started stealing the cables and photocells of the newly installed streetlights – Minister

March 13, 2025
OCLOO

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Madam Linda Ocloo, has disclosed that some individuals have started stealing some parts of the newly installed streets in the region.

The minister revealed this in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM with host Kwabena Agyapong.

She indicated that in line with her pledge to light the capital city, her ministry has achieved a 50% replacement of all the faulty street lights.

However, the challenge confronting the exercise indicates that some individuals have started stealing the parts of the streetlights, particularly the photocells.

A photocell is a dawn-to-dusk device used to switch on lights and other items during the night and off during the day.

Madam Ocloo lamented that the situation was worrying and appealed to the public to support the ministry in apprehending those behind the criminal act.

‘’ We have achieved 50% installation of the street lights, and soon, we will engage with the press and show the public the areas where we have installed the lights. However, the challenge we face is that some individuals have started stealing the parts of the lights. They are stealing the cables of the lights and the photocell. I am advising those stealing the parts to stop, or when they are caught, we will not spare them. If you are caught tampering with the streetlights, you will not be spared.

Even recently on the ones we did, we went back to inspect them and discovered they had stolen some parts, including the cables and photocells. This is unfortunate, and when you keep doing this, how do we achieve our goals and aims? Without the streetlights, crime will increase. I am appealing to Ghanaians to support us in arresting those behind the criminal act.’’
