Galamsey is causing havoc, and we’re ready to support the govt to address it – Minority

Second Deputy Minority Chief Whip Ahmed Shaib has declared that ‘The Mighty Minority’ is prepared to offer assistance in helping the current government combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

He stated that, unlike the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which frustrated the efforts of former President Akufo-Addo in dealing with galamsey, the NPP remains committed to providing constructive criticism in the fight against galamsey.

”We are a mighty minority that is there to provide constructive criticism. We will not frustrate the government; we will support the government in making the country better.”

He noted that former President Akufo-Addo has been a major person fighting galamsey, but he did not get the support of the NDC.

”The man put his presidency on the line. You are aware that in 2020, we did not have it easy. NPP had a tough time because of galamsey because we virtually lost in all the mining areas.’

He added that ”the NDC, including President Mahama, promised to give amnesty to those arrested and prosecuted for illegal mining. But we have departed from that because the illegal mining activities threaten human life. As I speak with you, the source of water in Weija Gbawe, my constituency, has been badly affected. We are witnessing babies being born with deformities due to galamsey. Food security is becoming a problem due to galamsey,” he stated.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the Weija Gbawe MP lamented that the selfishness and greed of some few individuals are creating serious danger to the entire country and citizens, hence the reason why they have declared their support for the government to fight against galamsey.

”We want Ghanaians to understand that galamsey is a threat to the country. We have to protect our country, our environment, our forest reserves, and our water bodies. If we want to engage in mining, we have to do legitimate mining. Let us not do partisanship with illegal mining; we have to collaborate and fight this existential threat. We will support anyone who is prepared to fight illegal mining,” he told host Kwabena Agyapong.
