The former Director General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, have sued the Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over a GH¢200 million bail for both of them.
Lawyers for the two have described the bail conditions set by the prosecutors as “unjustifiably harsh”.
Lead counsel Samuel Atta Akyea Esq. claimed that the GH¢120 million bail demand for Adu-Boahene and GH¢80 million for his wife are not only excessive but also appear designed to circumvent constitutional detention limits.
“The Respondents with a clear motive to incarcerate the Applicants beyond the 48-hour period as spelt out by the Constitution have imposed burdensome and unreasonable conditions on the Applicants as the precondition for their granting them bail.”
“The justification of the bail is at the pleasure of the Respondents,” they stated, calling the move a blatant violation of their clients’ right to liberty. They further accused the state of denying them proper legal counsel and obstructing due process.
