After the third round of voting at the conclave, the 133 cardinals have elected a new pope for the Catholic Church.
The College of Cardinals began meeting in Vatican City on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, to elect a new pope as the Bishop of Rome.
The voting process is reserved for those under the age of 80 in the College of Cardinals.
They were required to vote to elect a new pontiff following the death of Pope Francis. Pope Francis, the 266th Vicar of Christ, was elected in 2013 and died on April 21, 2025.
A papal conclave is an ancient electoral process through which the Catholic Church elects a new leader behind closed doors.
The College of Cardinals, by tradition, will now signal to the world that a new pope has been selected after white smoke billows from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel.
Meanwhile, the identity of the pope has yet to be revealed by authorities.
