The Accra Metropolitan Assembly reminding residents that the ban on noisemaking will start on May 12, 2025.
The ban which earlier announced by the Ga traditional Council will take effect from Monday, May 12, to Thursday, June 12, as part of the traditional preparations for the Homowo Festival.
The ban on noise making and drumming is an annual event observed to create an atmosphere of peace, solemnity, and spiritual reflection ahead of the festival, which celebrates unity, resilience, and gratitude for a bountiful harvest.
It is legally recognised under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which upholds the practice of customary law and cultural traditions. Article 11(3) of the Constitution acknowledges customary law as an integral part of the country’s legal framework, while Article 26(1) guarantees communities the right to preserve their cultural heritage.
During the period, churches are expected to carry out their services within their premises and refrain from the use of musical instruments. Positioning of loud speakers outside the premises of churches, mosques, and pubs are banned. Roadside evangelists are also required to cease their activities during the month long exercise.
In the statement, the AMA urged traditional and religious leaders to respect one another and refrain from making disparaging and inflammatory remarks about one another’s beliefs and practices.
The ban also affects funeral rites and other related activities.
