Otumfuo reaffirms political neutrality, pledges allegiance to Ghanaian sovereignty

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has once again firmly denied any affiliation with a political party, emphasising that his ultimate loyalty lies with the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people rather than any political faction.

Addressing the Ghanaian community in Toronto during his recent visit, the traditional ruler explained that his role requires him to collaborate with whoever is duly elected to the high office of the presidency.

He noted that he is currently working closely with President John Dramani Mahama.

Reflecting on his decades-long engagement with Ghana’s political leadership, the Asantehene revealed that he has counseled every Head of State since the era of President Jerry John Rawlings.

He reiterated his commitment to offering private, constructive counsel to the current administration to foster national development.

“My conviction is that any government elected by the people of Ghana, I have to work with the President and offer him my advice on the quiet,” Otumfuo stated to an appreciative audience. “I work with whoever Ghanaians elect as President; I am now working with Mahama.”

His institutional memory and advisory role date back to 1999, when he first engaged and worked alongside President Rawlings.

Since that initial partnership, he has consistently extended his counsel to Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor, John Evans Atta Mills, John Dramani Mahama during his first term, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Following the recent election, he has seamlessly resumed that advisory role with President Mahama.
