Dr Sidi Ould Tah, from Mauritania, has been elected as President of the African Development Bank (AfDB).
He was contesting for the presidency along with other individuals such as Amadou Hott (Senegal), Samuel Munzele Maimbo (Zambia), Abbas Mahamat Tolli (Chad), and Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala (South Africa).
The election was conducted today, Thursday, May 29, 2025, during the Bank’s Annual Meeting in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The meeting was to provide the members an opportunity to elect the successor to the outgoing president, Dr Akinwumi A. Adesina.
Prior to the election, he served as the President of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa.
It took three rounds of voting to narrow down the field to five candidates.
At the end of the process, the newly elected President won (76.18%), defeating Zambia’s Samuel Maimbo (20.26%) and Senegal’s Amadou Hott (3.55%).
Chad’s Mahamat Abbas Tolli was the first to be eliminated, receiving only 0.88% of the vote, followed by South Africa’s Swazi Tshabalala (5.9%).
