Mahdi Gibril, Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has offered insight into why the cedi continues to appreciate versus the dollar and other major currencies.
He stated that one of the reasons the cedi continued to depreciate against the dollar and other major currencies was because certain greedy individuals hoarded dollars.
He stated that President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership has steadied the cedi and guaranteed that the economy recovers from the abyss into which the previous government had plunged.
Mahdi Gibril blasted the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for attempting to undercut the current government’s efforts and take credit for the cedi’s recent achievements.
“The ruling government has implemented strong economic policies and measures aimed at stabilising the cedi. This isn’t a nine-day miracle. We maintain fiscal discipline and avoid spending recklessly. This is exactly what a serious government does. A responsible government spends wisely and keeps its promises.”
He slammed former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, calling him a failed economist who was hailed as an economic messiah but failed to keep the economy stable.
Mahdi Gibril said the wife of the former Vice President, Samira Bawumia, also touted her husband as a competent personality, but it turned out to be false.
He stated the former second lady has gone quiet because she no longer has the privileges of using dollars she had access to in purchasing her cosmetics.
“Samira Bawumia has gone quiet because she no longer has dollars to buy her cosmetics, which has significantly contributed to the dollar’s depreciation.” She no longer has enough money to purchase all of her previous items. Let no one deceive you. The cedi appreciation is solely due to the work we have done.”
He concluded that those who claimed the cedi appreciation was artificial and would not last are now shifting the goalposts, making even more ridiculous claims that we should not allow the cedi to appreciate too much.
