The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, led by president Mr Joseph Atsu Homadzie, has thanked Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu and his Deputy Minister Dr Clement Apaak for their dedication and commitment to ensuring that the government’s promise to provide free tertiary education for PWDs is fulfilled.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Joseph Atsu Homadzie described their meeting with the minister and his deputy as fruitful.
He confirmed that the minister has established a committee, co-chaired by the deputy minister, to oversee the policy’s implementation.
He noted that, while the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss a variety of issues, key topics on the agenda included access to tertiary education for PWDs, timelines for implementing the Inclusive Education Policy, budgetary allocations for disability-friendly education, the introduction of sign language in basic schools, as promised by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and the provision of assistive technology to improve learning for PWDs.
He stated that the Minister’s assurance was positive, adding, “We are grateful to the minister and his deputy.” The meeting we had was productive and encouraging. We will continue to work with authorities to address issues affecting PWDs. We are optimistic that the current government’s policies will improve teaching and learning for people with disabilities. We are pleased that the Minister and his deputy have demonstrated their commitment to dealing with issues affecting people with disabilities in the education sector”.
He also praised the President for decapping the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).
“The previous government capped the GETFund, which created several challenges for the education sector. However, the current government’s decapping will ensure that the GETFund receives the resources it requires to implement or embark on education-related projects.”
