The Minister for Interior, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has apprised Parliament of the Ghana Prison Service’s advancements in ensuring the safety, security, and rehabilitation of inmates in custody.
According to the minister, the prison service is bolstering its staff’s capabilities to effectively manage and rehabilitate prisoners.
Furthermore, the service is collaborating with some key stakeholders to enhance rehabilitation programmes and healthcare services for inmates.
He emphasised that inmates are being equipped with skills and education to facilitate their reintegration into society.
The Asawase Member of Parliament noted that the Ghana Prison Service operates under a vision to establish a world-class institution prioritising public safety through exemplary corrections management.
He was, however, quick to say that although progress has been made, there is the need for further improvement to align the service with international best practices.
“The Prisons Service, besides securing prisoners in custody in terms of safety and security, also provides a conducive opportunity for their reformation and rehabilitation.”
Over the years, the service has achievedaby milestones, including improved human resources, enhanced collaboration with stakeholders, improved healthcare for officers and inmates, and improved rehabilitation and reformation programmes for inmates. While these achievements are remarkable and worth celebrating, there is still more to be done to bring the service at par with international best practices to ensure that the social and economic rights of the population, especially the less privileged, including the incarcerated, are met.”
