The 2024 NPP parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Akua Afriyie, has alleged that the Electoral Commission (EC) is exhibiting bias in favour of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) by ordering a rerun in 19 polling stations within the constituency.
She lamented that the EC had succumbed to intimidation and coercion, leading them to issue a misleading statement regarding the matter. Her remarks follow the EC’s announcement of a rerun after disputes over the authenticity of election results from the December 7, 2024, general election.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the candidate claimed that the collation had been completed in all but three polling stations. She stated that the sudden shift by the EC to declare a rerun in 19 polling stations is highly questionable.
She told host Kwabena Agyapong, “The EC testified under oath in Parliament that only three polling stations were left to be declared. So why has the electoral body suddenly changed its claims and now declared a rerun in 19 polling stations? This is questionable and an attempt to skew the process for the ruling government.”
Afriyie further asserted, “As a candidate, I will not accept this rerun. I cannot accept it because we had already gone through all the collation, and we were left with only three polling stations to complete the collation and declaration. So, what changed? Why is the NDC bent on taking over this seat? If they won, as they claimed, then why are they calling for a rerun? The NDC projected the rerun right after the collation, and now the EC has allowed the NDC to influence them to make a U-turn on the matter.”
She maintained that “what is happening poses a threat to our democracy and sets a bad precedent. The NDC’s candidate did not win but is going around telling people that her party is in power and will therefore do everything possible to have her declared the elected MP. This constitutes an abuse of power and is clearly undemocratic”.
