Prominent private legal practitioner, Mr. Anokye Frimpong, has voiced strong objections to the 15-year prison sentence handed down to self-acclaimed evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, widely known as Nana Agradaa.
Mr. Frimpong believes the term for fraud and charlatanic advertisements is “too excessive” and has urged her legal team to immediately appeal the decision.
While acknowledging that the presiding judge likely acted based on the facts and evidence presented during the trial, Mr. Frimpong emphasized that the duration of the sentence was disproportionate.
Nana Agradaa received her 15-year imprisonment with hard labor from an Accra Circuit Court due to her involvement in fraudulent religious activities. The conviction came after the court found her guilty on multiple counts of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretense.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr. Anokye expressed his profound disappointment: “I am extremely sad at the number of years handed to her. There are people who have subjected over 33 million Ghanaians to evil and cruelty, and yet they are still walking around free or handed just a few years. I am not endorsing her actions, but the number of years is excessive, and I think the media has a responsibility to talk about this.”
He further argued to host Kwabena Agyapong that those who were parties to the case took a “step of faith.” He stated, “it is not every prayer that God answers, and so after going to her to seek for her help and it did not work, you cannot go about claiming that you have been defrauded.”
Regarding the potential appeal, Mr. Anokye outlined four possible outcomes: the sentence could be vacated entirely, the 15-year term could be maintained, she could face an increased sentence, or the initial 15 years could be reduced.
