National Cathedral Board rejects dissolution directive and refutes Minister’s remarks

The Board of the National Cathedral of Ghana has expressed strong disappointment with recent remarks made by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, regarding the ongoing National Cathedral project.

The Board is currently reviewing the full content of the Minister’s press conference to formulate a comprehensive response.

A primary concern for the Board is what it describes as a “not full disclosure” during the Minister’s press conference.

Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah, who signed the statement on behalf of the Board, indicated that the Minister’s focus was primarily on the management letter, seemingly disregarding the official Audit reports for 2020-2023.

“This is rather strange,” the Board stated, accusing the press conference of presenting information “skewed towards queries in the Management letter,” thereby “totally disregarding the detailed responses of the Board.”

The statement by the Board added “the queries and the responses form the content of the Management letter which was in the possession of the Minister.”

The Board also strongly opposes the directive to dissolve it.

The Chair noted that despite investigations by state agencies, including the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), the President has instructed the Attorney General to take steps to dissolve the Board “without any formal finding of wrongdoing.”

He described the directive as troubling but reaffirmed their commitment to the project.

“As a Board, we took on the responsibility to lead the development of the National Cathedral with the firm conviction that this was a critical national infrastructure,” the statement read, concluding, “Despite the challenges the project has faced, we remain committed to the vision of a National Cathedral for the Nation.”
