The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama will soon launch a more aggressive approach to fighting illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, August 14, 2025, the Minister noted that the government remains committed to dealing with the crisis once and for all.
The remarks by the Minister come after the helicopter crash that occurred on August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of eight personalities, including the Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Environment, Science and Technology Minister, Murtala Mohammed.
Following the incident, several individuals, organizations, and civil society groups have called on the President to take decisive action against galamsey.
They have urged that the deaths of the eight not be in vain, as they were attending an event in connection with the fight against galamsey.
Mr. Ablakwa assured the Ghanaian public that the new approach will help protect the environment, safeguard water resources, and preserve livelihoods in affected communities.
“I can confirm to you that you are going to see a fight that has never been witnessed before in this country. President Mahama is going to lead a very ruthless and relentless fight against galamsey.
“He didn’t mince his words. We had a brief cabinet meeting and the President was very clear that he would lead a war we have never seen before to stop this existential threat confronting us,” he stated.
