Over 100 members of the Peaceful Settlement Association in Ashaiman have taken to the streets, accusing the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) of unlawfully seizing land under a court injunction to hand it over to a private developer.

The spokesperson for the traders, Jeffery Eli, states that traders, many of whom have already lost their shops, will resist any forced eviction until due process is followed.

In an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he noted that there is an attempt to forcefully evict them.

He disclosed that they have been occupying the land since 1960 and were the ones who applied and had the land leased to them by TDC.

Before he spoke to Frontline, he had engaged with the media at the scene, stressing that they would resist any attempt to forcibly remove them from the site until the court delivers its ruling.

“We are here to protest against the municipal executives for intimidating us into signing an illegal agreement with a private developer. These developers called us into an office and demanded we sign an agreement with the encroacher so he could take over the land. The land belongs to the Peaceful Settlement Association, and we have documents to prove ownership.

“We do not understand why the MCE is intimidating us under the guise of decongestion and attempting to settle the matter out of court. The case is in court, and it should be decided there,” he said.
