The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has served notice that health professionals may be compelled to withdraw their services if violent attacks against them persist.
The GMA’s warning comes after an incident of an alleged assault on some health workers at the Ridge Hospital in Accra.
Health workers were allegedly assaulted by relatives of a patient, an incident the GMA has condemned.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, and signed by the GMA’s President, Dr. Frank Serebour, and General Secretary, Dr. Richard Selormey, the Association said it was unfortunate that some persons who had their relatives on admission were verbally and physically attacking staff at the hospital’s Emergency Unit.
“These acts of impunity where health professionals are abused verbally, physically, or both… must cease forthwith,” the Association said.
It has therefore called on the Ghana Police Service to swiftly identify and prosecute the perpetrators, warning that such “lawless acts” endangered both staff and patients.
“There exist clearly laid down processes and procedures to resolve concerns or grievances rather than resorting to violence,” the statement said.
The GMA further slammed the Minister of Health for engaging cordially with the individual who is believed to have led the attack on the health workers.
“Such displays only serve to encourage and embolden some unruly individuals to follow similar ways,” the GMA added.
Meanwhile, it has also advised the management of the hospital to investigate the matter thoroughly, address any legitimate concerns, and provide both medical and psychological support to the affected staff.
It concluded by reiterating that “The GMA warns that if these senseless attacks continue, health workers would have to exercise their right to remove themselves from situations that present imminent and serious danger to our lives, safety or health”.
