Former Black Stars defender Habib Mohammed has shared his thoughts on the 24-man squad selected by the head coach of the senior national team for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Mali and Chad.
He stated that choosing three goalkeepers is “not a bad choice,” emphasising that the most important thing is for the team to secure victory in the two upcoming qualifiers.
Speaking on Rainbow Sports, he said that the squad is generally good and, with commitment and dedication, the players can make Ghana and Ghanaians proud.
He was optimistic that Ghana could win both games, adding that the dynamics of football have changed. “In the past, we could have easily predicted that we would have defeated Mali and Chad, but in modern times, the game has changed, and so you cannot underestimate any country,” he said.
He advised the players to remain focused and disciplined and to remember that they are representing their country.
“You have to think about the country first. Getting a call-up to join the squad should not be taken for granted. You should be proud, but also patriotic,” he said.
The retired footballer also expressed concern over the neglect of local players during call-ups, saying, “Ghanaians at a point expressed their disappointment in how the local players were neglected, and when some of them got the opportunity to join the team, they did their best and were eager to serve the country. But the most important thing to consider is the status of our league. If we are not seeing local players being called up, then we should demand answers about the status of the local league.”
He was also of the view that while it wasn’t a bad idea for the top scorer in the just-ended premier league to be given a call-up, it was also important to consider competence.
When asked specifically if Ghana has a chance of securing the six points from the two games against Mali and Chad, he said, “It is possible for us to get the six points from these two games. If the team remains focused and with the players we have, I am 100 percent confident that we will secure wins in the upcoming games.”
