Samuel Basford, a former convict currently undergoing rehabilitation at Chosen Rehab in Greater Accra, revealed how hard drugs consumed a significant part of his life. In an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Basford, who spent over a decade in jail for various offenses, shared that he began using drugs in junior high school.
To fuel his addiction to cocaine and other hard drugs, he resorted to stealing and robbing people. Basford recounted an incident where he stole electronics and sensitive documents from a military officer’s private hospital. He had an opportunity to return the items and avoid prosecution but had already sold them to people who helped him buy cocaine.
Even after his first prison sentence, Basford returned to his criminal ways, stealing from banks and other facilities to buy cocaine. He explained that CCTV cameras often captured his crimes, leading to his subsequent arrest and prosecution.
Basford expressed deep regret, describing drug addiction as a dangerous experience that robs you of your sanity and humanity and leads to legal trouble. He also disclosed that drug use was rampant among inmates, as they easily accessed drugs while in custody. They purchased drugs with money given to them by the public while they were out working.
He shared how he ended up at Chosen Rehab. He was preparing to steal at a market in Kasoa when he encountered Apostle Daniel Cobby Washington, the founder of Chosen Rehab. Their conversation set him on a path toward rehabilitation. Basford advises the youth to avoid drugs, warning of their severe negative consequences.
