David Kankam Boadu, the former spokesperson for the late Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, has announced his intention to contest for the National Chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating he is an integral part of the party’s founding.
Mr Kankam Boadu declared on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline programme, hosted by Kwabena Agyapong, that he was one of the key figures who established the NPP. He described himself as an “Alpha and Omega” of the party’s founding fathers.
He told the host that he is the only aspiring candidate with an “unblemished record”, possessing integrity and no “dirty little secrets” that would hinder his campaign. He challenged all other hopefuls for the chairmanship to step forward and explain to the party and Ghanaians why they should be elected and prove their integrity.
He believes the NPP has reached a critical point and needs a visionary leader to unify the party and address its current challenges. He recalled the early days of the party when it was established without a strong membership base, a time when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was allegedly “brutalising and assaulting” its members.
He emphasised that it took brave and courageous individuals to establish the party in Ghana after it had gained roots in the United Kingdom.
According to Boadu, his long service and dedication to the NPP’s core values make him the best candidate for the position. “My name cannot be excluded from the founding fathers,” he stated.
“I saw the foundation of the NPP. I was part of the courageous men and women who voluntarily served the NPP. When the NPP came to Ghana, we had no members. We were assaulted and brutalised by the NDC. We invested our efforts and sacrificed for the NPP and had no intention of being rewarded with any monetary values. We had a vision, and that vision was to see the NPP gain prominence.”
When asked why he decided to run, he responded that the party needs a unifier. “The party is currently at a point where it is heading for destruction,” he warned. “If we don’t take care, the NPP will turn into the CPP and be no longer relevant. We had more than 160 MPs in alignment, but today, the party has less than 90 MPs. We have to rescue the party from destruction.”
He concluded by stressing that the party remains divided and that there is an urgent need to resolve all internal crises to ensure the party’s continued relevance.
