The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has reported receiving numerous complaints about illegal structures that obstruct motorists’ vision and increase the risk of crashes and pedestrian knockdowns.
The Authority stated that despite repeated warnings, assemblies failed to remove the billboards, which prompted the NRSA to take action itself.
Pearl Adusu Sateckla, the Public Relations Officer, explained that they had previously written to the assemblies to remove the billboards, but since that failed, the Authority has “taken it upon ourselves to remove them.”
She reiterated that the NRSA will pursue legal action against any assemblies that permit the placement of billboards on road medians. “The NRSA will sue any assembly that allows the erection of billboards in breach of the laid-down guidelines,” she said.
The PRO stressed that these violations are most frequently recorded in the capital.
“We have a responsibility to prioritise pedestrian safety by eliminating billboard obstructions that hinder visibility and movement,” she stated. “At the NRSA, we will not allow anyone to engage in unlawful activities that threaten the safety of the people. We will continue to take down billboards positioned on medians, roundabouts, and intersections.”
She concluded with a strong warning: “We are also planning and preparing to deal with the larger advertising structures affecting pedestrian walkways and footbridges. If we remove them and you erect them again, we will drag you to court and prosecute you.”
