President John Dramani Mahama has stated that, contrary to misinformation circulated ahead of the 2024 elections suggesting his administration would cancel the Free Senior High School policy, the current government has maintained and improved it compared to the previous administration’s efforts.
In his opening remarks at his first media encounter on Wednesday, September 2025, the President noted that his administration has not only upheld the policy but has also made budgetary allocations that surpass those of the previous government.
He asserted, “Contrary to the widespread misinformation that was circulated before the December 7, 2024, elections, the free SHS policy has not only been maintained. Indeed, it has been strengthened. We’ve made the highest budgetary allocation in the history of the policy. As at now, a staggering Ghc3.5 billion Ghana cedis has been dedicated to the free SHS.”
He acknowledged that access without quality is inadequate, which is why the government is implementing a decentralized feeding policy. This will enable school management to make their own arrangements and provide students with quality meals.
President Mahama added that the government’s commitment to foundational learning remains robust, with basic education receiving its highest budget allocation in almost a decade. This reflects its determination to rebuild the educational foundation from the ground up, with GH₵564.6 million allocated so far for textbooks.
He assured the public that the government is also addressing longstanding challenges, particularly those resulting from reduced funding in the recent past.
