Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana, Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, has advised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by President John Dramani Mahama, to deliver on its promises and avoid a situation where it would later have to apologize for misgovernance.
She referenced former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s apology to Ghanaians, where he admitted the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could have performed better and asked for forgiveness. According to her, this kind of politics must stop.
Madam Daniels stated that politicians must learn to deliver on their promises after winning power. She believes the recent wave of apologies from the former Vice President and other NPP-affiliated personalities demonstrates how political parties have taken Ghanaians for granted.
“Former Vice President Dr. Bawumia has offered several apologies. Others have also done the same for poor governance while in office. Politicians keep begging after going into opposition,” she said. “The NDC did the same thing, and yet when these two parties get into office, they repeat the same mistakes. When will they stop deceiving Ghanaians? I am advising the President and his party to learn a lesson from what is happening to the NPP. The government should deliver on its promises to the people. Ghanaians trusted the NDC and voted for John Dramani Mahama, so you cannot take them for granted.”
She continued, “You cannot share money with everyone who voted for you, but you have a responsibility to deliver on your promises instead of waiting for elections to share bags of rice and GH₵50. Our politicians should wise up and know that the voters who elect them are not fools. They observe what goes on, and when you mess up, they will vote you out of office. I also think government appointees should conduct themselves well and avoid extravagance, as such acts will infuriate Ghanaians. We don’t need ‘tin gods’; we need servants. Today, the NPP and its members are begging in opposition. When they were in office and we complained about hardship, they ignored us, and now they are begging. The NDC should learn a lesson from that.”
