Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has stated that she has been vindicated by the findings in the report by the Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, on the Kasoa shooting incident.

The former Fisheries Minister said in a statement that she had been unfairly criticised and attacked.

The Interior Minister this week provided an update on the deaths recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

He stated that the violent incident which occurred in Kasoa in 2024 was caused by security lapses and institutional failures, rather than the actions or instigation of any individual.

He also revealed that Philis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, who is now the Member of Parliament for the area, when interrogated said her convoy was nowhere near the scene of the incident.

Hawa Koomson, reacting to this, said:
“For years, I endured harsh and unfair public attacks. I was branded violent, reckless, and unfit for office through sensational and misleading headlines. The Interior Minister’s findings have vindicated me, confirming that the violence was not directed by me but stemmed from broader systemic failures in election security coordination”.

According to her, the incident damaged her reputation and career.

She said the incident was one of the most painful periods of her public life.

Madam Koomson has therefore called for the full implementation of the Interior Minister’s recommendations — including compensation for victims, enhanced police training, the use of non-lethal crowd control tools, and the discontinuation of military involvement in election operations.

“This moment calls not for blame, but for introspection, justice, and national unity. May this truth restore faith in our institutions and strengthen our democracy,”
