The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for calm among its supporters in the Kpandai Constituency following a controversial Tamale High Court ruling that nullified the 2020 parliamentary election results and ordered a rerun.
Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, popularly known as Nana Kay, a member of the NPP’s Communications and Elections Directorate, confirmed the party’s decision to appeal the ruling, which he strongly suggested was politically motivated.
”The party has taken a decision to appeal the High Court’s decision, which we believe was politically motivated and part of an agenda to give the ruling government an undue advantage over us,” Nana Kay stated.
The NPP in the Kpandai Constituency has officially protested the High Court’s verdict, describing the ruling as “deeply troubling” and “regrettable” and arguing that it constitutes a miscarriage of justice.
In an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, Nana Kay echoed sentiments previously voiced by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, suggesting the court was acting on behalf of external “paymasters”.
”While we respect the institution of the court, we totally disagree with its decision, and that is why the party has decided to appeal it,” Nana Kay explained. “The court went beyond the reliefs filed by the NDC. They raised concerns over only 41 polling stations, but the court ordered a rerun in the entire 152 polling centres. That is unfortunate, and we disagree with it.”
The party maintains that its candidate, Mr Matthew Nyindam, remains the duly elected Member of Parliament and is confident he will secure victory should a rerun ultimately be held.
Nana Kay used the platform to appeal directly to party supporters, urging them to exercise restraint and avoid any form of violence or vigilantism.
”We are appealing to party supporters to remain calm. The NPP has taken a lawful step in challenging the ruling, and we want our supporters to exercise patience and allow the party to deal with the matter through legal channels,” he stressed. “The gazetted results on the EC’s website clearly show that the NPP’s candidate won the elections, and so it is unfortunate this has happened.”
He cautioned supporters against taking the law into their own hands, adding, “To the NDC, they should also be reminded that no form of intimidation will make us remain silent. They should deal with the real issues of economic instability. They claim the cedi has made gains, but that is not reflecting in our pockets.”
