MP Afenyo-Markin denies allegations of voter interference in Effutu

January 31, 2026

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, has strongly refuted claims that he was present near a polling station to influence voters during the ongoing party flagbearer contest.

In a formal statement, the lawmaker dismissed the allegations as “entirely false” and described them as a calculated attempt by political adversaries to distort the facts.

Afenyo-Markin maintained that he has strictly adhered to all guidelines set by the Electoral Commission (EC) and party leadership throughout the electoral process.

Addressing “Orchestrated” Allegations
The Minority Leader suggested that these claims are part of a broader campaign to tarnish his reputation.

“This spurious allegation is merely the latest in a series of plots orchestrated by my adversaries,” he said.

To support this, he cited a manipulated video circulated earlier this month, which falsely suggested he failed to applaud a specific candidate during the signing of a peace pact at the Alisa Hotel on January 22, 2026.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized his physical absence from the polling perimeter to ensure the integrity of the vote: “At no time have I been anywhere near the voting area as claimed, nor have I engaged in any conduct that could be construed, even remotely, as undue influence,” he stated.

The MP clarified that his presence in the constituency was solely to cast his own vote and perform lawful oversight. He noted that these actions were conducted in full compliance with the regulations governing party members and public officials.

I have become aware of circulating claims alleging my presence near a polling booth in Effutu, purportedly influencing voters and compromising ballot secrecy. These assertions are entirely false and constitute a deliberate distortion of facts.

Since the beginning of the flagbearer contest, I have been targeted by certain unscrupulous individuals, yet throughout, I have remained calm and focused. ???????????????? ???????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????? ???????? ???????????????????????? ???????????? ???????????????????????? ???????? ???? ???????????????????????? ???????? ???????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????? ???????? ????????????????????????????????????????????. At one point, a manipulated video was widely circulated, falsely claiming that I did not applaud a particular candidate during their introduction at the signing of the peace pact at the Alisa Hotel on January 22, 2026. These vile tactics are as transparent as they are desperate.

I urge all stakeholders particularly the EC, security agencies and political actors to prioritize peace, transparency and the integrity of our democracy. Crass fabrications such as these only seek to sow discord and undermine voter confidence. Let us focus on a free, fair and credible exercise.

The members and supporters of the great NPP deserve better. I call on all parties to desist from such misinformation and allow the process to proceed unhindered.

Thank you.
