GWCL attributes Weija flooding to heavy rains and waterway encroachment, not dam spillage

May 28, 2026
GWCL

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has refuted claims that the ongoing spillage of the Weija Dam is responsible for recent flooding in the surrounding communities.

Contrary to media reports suggesting the spillage has submerged several homes in the area, the company maintains these assertions are entirely false.

Mr. Stanley Martey, the Public Relations Officer for GWCL, clarified during an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem that the dam’s operations have nothing to do with the current deluge.

Instead, he attributed the flooding to heavy seasonal rainfall combined with structures built directly in waterways.

According to Mr. Martey, the company has been consistently spilling water from the dam since last year without any recorded incidents of flooding.

Therefore, he argued, it is inaccurate to blame the recent structural inundation on the dam’s management.

“It is false for anyone to attribute the recent floods to the spillage. Since we started the spillage last year, we had not stopped. We continued spilling the water from the dam. The dam has reached a level where we have to consistently spill the excess water. The floods are due to the recent rains and the building on waterways and blockage of spaces that the water can move through. That is the challenge we’re encountering”.

Mr. Martey urged local authorities to take immediate, proactive action against individuals erecting structures in unauthorized water paths, stressing that prevention is key to halting this recurring issue.

“If we dong do that, we will continue to witness the flooding situation annually. Our authorities must he proactive and stop those putting up structures on waterways. If we fail in doing that, we will continue to witness the flooding situation every year “he stressed.
