NPP is a good party with great policies, but its recent failures must keep it in opposition for 12 years – Bishop Bonegas

Bishop Daniel Kwame Kissi, aka Bonegas, has opined that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should remain in opposition for the next 8 to 12 years.

He argued that the period will help the party learn from its mistakes, gain experience, and return to power stronger, while praising former President John Dramani Mahama for learning from past challenges and delivering improved governance.”

He said this in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio FM on Thursday, 5th February 2026.

The man of God asserted “that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should remain in opposition for the next eight to twelve years in order to reflect, correct its faults, and build the needed experience before returning to power.”

According to the Bishop, periods in opposition offer political parties the opportunity to learn important lessons that ultimately strengthen governance.

He cited former President John Dramani Mahama as an example, explaining that Mahama learnt from his time in opposition after identifying power blackout, popularly known as dumsor, as a major reason for his earlier electoral defeat.

Bishop Bonegas noted that since returning to power, Mahama has addressed the electricity challenges, earning praise from many Ghanaians for improved leadership.

He added that if Mahama were to contest against Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, he believes Mahama would win convincingly.

He further admitted that the NPP is not a bad political party, stressing that the party has introduced several impactful policies over the years.

He praised the Free Senior High School policy introduced under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, describing it as a major success with lasting benefits for the country.

Bishop Daniel Kwame Kissi recalled other key initiatives, such as the National Health Insurance Scheme and Metro Mass Transit, introduced during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, as evidence of the NPP’s positive contributions to national development.

In spite of these achievements, Bishop Kissi maintained that the NPP would benefit from a longer stay in opposition to reorganise and improve.

He stressed that while the party has strong policies, time away from power would allow it to correct its shortcomings and return better prepared to govern Ghana in the future.
