Political analyst Alex Emmanuel Nti suggests it is premature to speculate on who will partner with Dr Bawumia as a running mate for the 2028 elections—particularly regarding Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who served in the role during the 2024 general elections.
Speaking in a recent interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Nti noted that Dr Bawumia must carefully evaluate several critical factors when choosing a running mate.
He identified regional dynamics and voter appeal: selecting a candidate who resonates with the masses. Value Addition: Ensuring the partner brings tangible political capital to the campaign.
Mr Nti indicated that a running mate must be an effective communicator who supports the presidential candidate without creating unnecessary controversy.
The analyst pointed out that during the 2024 cycle, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s communication style was often disruptive, failing to appeal effectively to the broader electorate.
“It is too early to consider Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as a running mate. The party must take into consideration some factors in selecting the running mate: public appeal, decent language, and effective communication. There should be some characteristics that will define the running mate, and the risk associated with him must be removed. He destroyed all the gains Dr Bawumia made during the campaigning in 2024. He was a mess of a running mate.”
Mr Nti highlighted that Dr Bawumia won the presidential primary by branding himself as a globally respected technocrat and a leader whose presence ensures stability. To maintain this image, he argued that the 2028 running mate must complement this brand rather than hinder it.
As an alternative, he noted that Bryan Acheampong holds significant appeal in the Volta Region. He suggested that if Dr Bawumia intends to make a serious impact in that region, such dynamics must be factored into the decision-making process.
