Godfred Dame’s licence must be revoked so he’ll go and sell ‘kube nsuo’ on the roadside – Listowel Nana Poku

Listowel Nana-Poku, a leading member of Arise Ghana, has reiterated his call for the legal licence of former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame to be revoked.

Nana-Poku claims the former senior state attorney misconducted himself by using his office to settle political scores and persecute political opponents.

Due to these allegations, he argues that Mr Dame should no longer be permitted to practise law.

Speaking on As It Is in Ghana, a political show on Rainbow Radio (87.5FM Ghana and 92.4FM UK), the activist highlighted the “ambulance saga” involving former Finance Minister Dr Ato Forson.

Listowel Nana-Poku noted that Mr Dame’s quest for a conviction led him to allegedly coach Richard Jakpa to lie under oath.

He pointed out that the recorded engagement between Dame and Jakpa became a major subject of national debate. Nana-Poku expressed disbelief that, following such a scandal, the former Attorney-General is still a practising lawyer.

He suggested that if his licence were revoked, Mr Dame could pursue other jobs, such as selling ‘kube nsuo’ (coconut juice).

“Godfred Dame was not prosecuting anyone; he was persecuting them. Ghanaians at home and abroad saw what he did. He attempted to lobby Richard Jakpa to lie under oath against Ato Forson so he would be sent to jail. Is that how we prosecute people? How can you try and lobby someone to lie against a person you are prosecuting just so they go to jail? Godfred Dame should have his licence revoked so that if he has to go and sell ‘kube nsuo’ (coconut juice) on the roadside, he can do that. He does not deserve to be practising as a lawyer in Ghana.”

“The Akufo-Addo government knew nothing about the law and recklessly used the law without operating within it. I describe them as a group of lawless lawyers. They were lawless to the core. Examine a case like that of Kwabena Duffuor: you collapse his business claiming he had liquidity issues, and yet you went about persecuting him, spending in excess of GH₵33 billion when you could have provided support to him and other affected banks. For an attorney-general who was using dubious means to prosecute his cases, he does not deserve to be a lawyer.”

Listowel Nana-Poku’s remarks were in response to the decision by the current Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, to file nolle prosequi (discontinuance) on several high-profile cases and the quest to prosecute cases against former appointees of the previous government.

He stated these withdrawals were fully justified and challenged anyone with evidence to the contrary to come forward.
