Bawumia calls for enhanced security after deadly attack on Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso

February 16, 2026

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed profound shock and grief following reports of a deadly terrorist attack in Burkina Faso that claimed the lives of several Ghanaian traders and left many others injured.

In a statement released earlier today on Facebook, he extended his sympathies to the victims’ families, speaking on behalf of himself, his wife Samira, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The flagbearer of the NPP stressed that the safety of Ghanaian citizens conducting business across borders must be a top priority, stating that traders should not be exposed to such extreme peril while seeking their livelihoods.

“Ghanaian traders must not be left to such peril as they go about their trade,” the Vice President remarked, underscoring the vulnerability of cross-border commerce in the sub-region.

To prevent further tragedies, the Vice President called for a multi-pronged approach to regional security that prioritises deeper intelligence collaboration with neighbouring countries to track and neutralise threats before they reach Ghanaian citizens.

He further emphasised the need for a more robust application of Ghana’s existing frameworks for preventing and countering violent extremism (PCVE), ensuring these strategies are strengthened to meet evolving challenges.

Dr Bawumia stressed that proactive protection must be a cornerstone of national policy, ensuring that Ghanaians are shielded from harm regardless of their geographical location or the nature of their trade.
