We’ll give this government a Fierce Showdown if they go ahead with the New Parliament Building Project

Commander-In-Chief of the Economic Fighters League, Ernesto Yoboah, has issued a stern warning of a “showdown” against the government should they proceed with plans to construct a new chamber for Parliament.

He described the proposal as a needless waste of resources and entirely unjustified, directly countering claims made by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

These remarks follow the Speaker’s recent appeal to the government to release land near the State House for the development of a dedicated parliamentary complex.

Speaking at the launch of Parliament’s Corporate Strategic Plan (2026–2030) on Thursday, February 12, Mr. Bagbin argued that Parliament continues to operate as a “tenant” at the State House—a situation he claimed is unsuitable for an independent arm of government.

In a fierce rebuttal, Ernesto Yeboah insisted the government must not yield to this request.

Speaking in an interview on As It Is Ghana via Rainbow Radio (87.5FM Ghana / 92.4FM UK), he argued that the Speaker has done the nation a great disservice by reviving a “dead issue” during a period of intense economic hardship.

He noted that raising such a project now proves the government is insensitive to the struggles of the people, particularly cocoa farmers who have been “shortchanged” and average workers earning less than GH₵1,000 a month.

“We want to send this caution to them: the Economic Fighters League will give them ‘Drop That Chamber’ Promax. They should not dare go ahead with this plan. It is needless and a waste of public resources.”

Ernesto Yeboah further pointed out that there is nothing structurally wrong with the current parliament building. He cited the United Kingdom—a nation Ghana often borrows from—as an example of a country that maintains and utilizes its historic buildings rather than constantly seeking new ones.

He also supported calls for the Speaker to step down, suggesting that Bagbin has reached the end of his contributions and should retire. He concluded by describing the Speaker as “the greatest beneficiary of our Fourth Republic.”
