The 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Ghana is scheduled to take place from Monday, May 4, to Monday, May 11, 2026. Over 600,000 candidates are expected to participate in this final assessment for junior high school students, which will be administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for both school and private candidates.

Speaking during the presentation, the MP said the move was in response to Ghana Education Service exam rules. If you have to write an exam, it’s a GES requirement that you don’t have to wear socks. And this is obviously to avoid cheating during exams, he explained.

Hon. Ahmed Shaib said he and his constituency executives thought it through that we should change the type of support we give to our BECE candidates. They contracted a local producer to make close to three thousand sandals that we call ‘beckoning stock’ for our BECE candidates.

“We started this before December last year. We went around to solicit their feet sizes or their shoe sizes, and then we were given them by the teachers, and then we went to the extent of now engaging the producer,” he said.

“What we have done today is to ensure that each and every candidate is given sandals so that you have the comfort when it is time for you to write your exams and write them and pass very well,” the MP added. “This is virtually to encourage them and to let them understand that we cherish them and we cherish their hard work.

Hon. Ahmed Shaib stressed that the sandal donation is just the beginning. Next, his office will provide trunks, mattresses, school bags, and some money under a programme “tagged the MP’s Freshers’ Fund”.

“We are doing all of this to support the parents, support families, and support the children. So that this burden that is normally brought to bear on parents and guardians would be reduced by the Member of Parliament,” he stated.
