Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah, Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, has petitioned the Minister for Works and Housing, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, to address the pollution of the Musuku River caused by construction works in the Kwabenya-Ashongman area.
In a statement, Acquah expressed concern over the contamination, saying it’s a pressing issue affecting the local community. “When will the Ghana Hydrological Authority pay attention to the construction works that started contaminating the Musuku River within the Kwabenya-Ashongman enclave?” he asked.
Responding, Minister Adjei assured the House that the Authority is aware of the situation and has designated the Musuku River as a key intervention area under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project (GARRID).
A detention pond and drainage project are planned to regulate stormwater, control sediment, and improve hydraulic performance. “Preliminary designs and visibility studies for the GARRID project have already been outlined,” Adjei said, adding that work will begin upon completion of necessary approvals.
The ministry is engaging stakeholders to stop waste dumping, enforce buffer zones, and desilt the river. “The Musuku River channel is part of the priority drainage systems earmarked under GARRID to address structural and environmental challenges,” Adjei assured.
The pollution of Ghana’s rivers is a pressing issue, with illegal mining, agricultural runoff, and municipal waste causing widespread contamination. The government’s Catchment Recovery Plan targets eight priority river bodies, including the Musuku River.
