President John Dramani Mahama has officially commended the Ghana Police Service for a series of successful operations that led to the apprehension of several high-profile criminals.

Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament on February 27, President Mahama highlighted that the proactive efforts of the police have significantly enhanced public confidence and national security.

The President, who recently extended the tenure of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu, noted that these results justify the leadership’s strategic direction.

The Ghana Police Service has recently intensified its crackdown on armed robbers, drug lords, and hardened criminals. A major breakthrough included the arrest of members of the notorious Duku Syndicate, a car-jacking group linked to multiple murders across the Ashanti and Western regions.

The syndicate has been implicated in several high-profile crimes, including: the robbery and killing of Eric Amankwa, father-in-law of GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi.

The murder of the driver for the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), whose vehicle was also stolen during the attack.

Driven by intelligence-led investigations, police intercepted the suspects at various locations throughout the Ashanti Region. Authorities revealed that the group was actively preparing for another robbery on February 23 but was neutralized by the police before the plan could be executed.

Beyond violent crime, the police have also targeted narcotics trafficking, arresting several individuals who attempted to smuggle drugs concealed in trucks and private vehicles.

Notably, some suspects attempted to bribe the arresting officers to escape justice. However, the officers rejected the inducements, ensuring the suspects remained in custody to face prosecution.

President Mahama praised the integrity and diligence of the force, emphasizing that the era of impunity for dangerous criminals is coming to an end.

“I want to take this opportunity to commend the IGP and the police service for arresting and bringing dangerous criminals to book across the country,” he said.
