In commemoration of the International Women’s Day 2026, Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has issued a powerful call to recognise women’s empowerment not as an act of charity but as a critical driver of national development.
Under the national theme “Giving to Gain”, the Vice President emphasised that Ghana’s progress is inextricably linked to the inclusion of women in high-level decision-making.
She pointed to the government’s intentional policy of ensuring women comprise at least 30% of public appointments as a benchmark for success.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated that when women serve as ministers, lead key public institutions, and help shape policy at the highest levels, the country benefits from a broader range of talent and perspective.
The vice president noted that the principle of inclusion must extend far beyond government institutions.
She opined that expanding opportunities in business, academia, civil society, the creative industries, and faith leadership enhances national life and strengthens the leadership pool the country relies on.
This multi-sectoral approach ensures that the “Giving to Gain” philosophy creates a more robust and diverse economic landscape.

On this International Women’s Day 2026, I send heartfelt greetings to all women and girls across Ghana and around the world. Let us be proud of the resilience, achievements, and essential contributions women continue to make to our nation’s progress.
In Ghana, the theme “Giving to Gain” is already demonstrated through concrete actions. The intentional effort to ensure women make up at least 30% of government appointments recognizes a simple truth about national development: when women serve as ministers, lead key public institutions, and help shape policy at the highest levels, the country benefits from a broader range of talent and perspective.
