The Member of Parliament for Walewale has reiterated the urgent need for Ghana to prioritise environmental protection by criminalising ecocide.

Hon. Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama made the call while speaking on the floor of Parliament on March 9, 2026, while contributing to a statement by the Minority Chief Whip, Hon. Frank Annor Dompreh, highlighting the need for Ghana to recognise ecocide as a crime.

The lawmaker noted that the country’s vulnerability to climate change makes it imperative to take drastic measures to safeguard the environment.

He referenced the destruction of plant and animal life as a pressing issue, citing Ghana’s ratification of the Ramsar convention and the endangered status of six Ramsar sites.

“The destruction of our ecosystems is not just an environmental issue; it’s a threat to our very existence,” he stressed.

He linked ecocide to climate change, global warming, and associated problems like flooding, new diseases, and migratory birds damaging farms.

“The consequences of our actions are far-reaching, and it’s time we take responsibility for our environment,” the Hon. Mahama said.

The MP urged Parliament to prioritise environmental protection, making ecocide a crime to safeguard Ghana’s ecosystem.

“The time for us to give much more attention to issues of ecocide is now,” he emphasised, supporting the statement read by Minority Chief Whip, Hon. Frank Annor Dompreh.

The proposed legislation aims to hold individuals and corporations accountable for environmental destruction, ensuring that those responsible for harming the environment face justice.
