The Director of Procurement for the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Yaw Asamoah Buckman, has respectfully requested that Ghanaians refrain from unfairly criticising the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, over the ongoing recruitment exercises.
In his opinion, to ensure the proper execution of initiatives, it is essential to support the government’s efforts in recruiting only qualified individuals for security services.
He advocates for a shift away from politicisation in security service recruitment, promoting a fair, transparent, and merit-based process that selects candidates based solely on their qualifications.
According to him, the government is committed to resolving issues such as political interference, extortion of applicants, and other corrupt practices that have plagued past recruitment exercises.
Therefore, he urges Ghanaians to support the Interior Minister’s efforts to sanitise the recruitment process, which will ultimately enable the selection of highly skilled personnel for the security services.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called for a review of the digital aptitude tests used in security force recruitment, warning the current system prejudices rural applicants with limited technology access.
While acknowledging digitalisation as a progressive step, Afenyo-Markin argued the process must be modified to ensure equity for candidates lacking internet connectivity or basic digital skills.
Some critics claim the minister’s strategy is creating difficulties for the government.
However, Nana Yaw Buckman dismissed the backlash as unwarranted, defending the efforts to enhance recruitment standards.
”I know there are political issues related to the ongoing recruitment exercise, but in my personal opinion, I think we need to take drastic decisions to improve the system. I have seen people unfairly criticise the minister, but I stress that we have to improve our systems and ensure that only qualified persons join our services. We cannot have a situation where, through protocol, people who did not even pass their medicals are still pushed to go through”, Buckman added.
He also expressed concerns over the sale of the forms, proposing that applicants should be allowed to apply and only be made to pay for the forms when they have passed and are preparing for their medicals.
