The Northern Regional Police Command has officially launched an investigation into reports of an assault involving renowned visual artist Ibrahim Mahama.
According to a press statement released on Saturday, March 21, the incident allegedly involved police officers within the Tamale metropolis.
The Regional Command has moved to assure the public that the matter is being taken seriously and that regular updates regarding the progress of the inquiry will be shared as they become available.
The incident has already generated criticism across social media and local news outlets.
However, the police administration used the briefing to address specific rumours circulating regarding the identity of the units involved.
Addressing reports that the Special Operations Team, popularly known as “The Black Maria”, was responsible for the confrontation, the Police Command categorically denied these claims.
“Claims in sections of the media that the Special Operations Team (the Black Maria) was involved in this case are false,” the statement, signed by Chief Inspector Luckman Niendow Alhassan, clarified.
The command noted that the specific unit has not been active in the Northern Region for several weeks, following an official withdrawal by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
Mr Ibrahim Mahama is a globally recognised figure in the contemporary art world and founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) in Tamale.
He took to social media to allege that he was assaulted by the police.
Meanwhile, the police have urged the public to remain calm while the internal investigation determines the facts of the case and ensures accountability for any misconduct found.
