The Creative Arts Agency has called for a probe into the alleged assault on renowned Ghanaian visual artist Ibrahim Mahama in Tamale.
A statement issued by the agency described the incident as a serious violation of human rights and artistic freedom.
The statement issued on Monday, March 23, 2026, said it was “deeply disturbed” by reports that Mahama was assaulted by officers of the Ghana Police Service, stressing that no citizen should be subjected to brutality or abuse.
“No citizen, regardless of profession or status, should be subjected to brutality, intimidation, or abuse by those entrusted with upholding law and order,” the statement said.
According to the Agency, Mahama is a globally recognised figure whose work continues to promote Ghana’s cultural identity on the international stage.
It opined that the incident could erode public trust and threaten the safe environment needed for creative expression.
“Ibrahim Mahama is a globally recognised cultural figure whose work continues to elevate Ghana’s creative identity on the international stage. Such actions, if proven, undermine public trust and threaten the safe, enabling environment necessary for artistic expression,” it added.
It further indicated that the police must conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter and ensure that officers found culpable are punished.
“We call on the Ghana Police Service to immediately launch a thorough, transparent investigation into the matter and ensure that all officers found culpable are held fully accountable in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
