The Northern Regional Police Command has dealt a significant blow to local drug trafficking networks following a coordinated “special operation” that resulted in the arrest of 77 suspects.
The operation, spearheaded by the Command’s Special Operations Team—popularly known as “Red Maria”—targeted known narcotics hotspots across the Tamale metropolis and the Savelugu Municipality.
The crackdown began on the night of Monday, March 23, 2026. At approximately 9:30 pm, a reinforced team of 33 personnel moved into the Lamashegu area, where the first suspect was taken into custody.

A statement issued by the police indicated that the team then shifted focus to the Aboabo market vicinity.
Police sources confirmed that one individual was apprehended there after being found in possession of a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine. Following this, intelligence led officers to the NOBISCO area, where an alleged supplier was arrested at his residence.

The largest portion of the operation took place in Savelugu.
Acting on fresh leads, the tactical team conducted a massive raid on a notorious drug peddling spot, resulting in the arrest of 74 additional suspects in a single sweep.
In addition to the arrests, police seized several items believed to be linked to criminal activity.

The items include 7 motorbikes and one Toyota Camry, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp (marijuana), and 10 sachets of Tramadol, a synthetic opioid frequently flagged by health officials for abuse.

In a statement signed by the Regional Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Luckman Niendow Alhassan, the Command confirmed that all 77 suspects are currently in custody.

“The suspects are being screened, and those found culpable will be arraigned before the court,” the statement read.
