The Central Regional Disaster Management Committee has announced a chlorine gas leak at the Baifikrom Water Treatment Plant and initiated an emergency response and safety advisory for nearby residents.
According to Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood Mensah, Central Regional Director of NADMO and Secretary to the Committee, the situation is under control with technical teams working to contain and neutralize the leak.
Residents in Baifikrom, Mankessim, Enyanmaim, and surrounding areas are advised to adhere to safety directives due to the gas’s potential health risks.
Chlorine gas, being heavier than air, necessitates specific precautions, including evacuation to higher ground or relocation in an upwind direction for those perceiving a strong bleach-like odor.
Those unable to evacuate should remain indoors with windows and doors sealed.
Authorities warn against seeking shelter in low-lying areas. Exposure to chlorine gas may cause eye irritation, blurred vision, skin redness, coughing, and difficulty breathing, with medical attention advised for persistent symptoms.
Medical personnel at nearby health facilities, including the Mankessim Catholic Hospital, are on alert.
The public is advised to remain calm and avoid the area to facilitate emergency operations. NADMO officials and Disaster Volunteer Groups are assisting with crowd control and guiding residents to safety. Further updates will be provided as efforts continue to secure the affected area.
