The Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Hon. Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, has conducted a working visit to the Kwayanko Water Works to evaluate current turbidity levels.
Speaking during a media interview, the lawmaker observed that the national campaign against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, is beginning to yield tangible results, noting a visible improvement in the clarity of the water.
Hon. Agbotui took the opportunity to urge the Ghanaian public to adopt responsible mining practices to safeguard the nation’s water bodies and natural heritage.
She emphasised that the greed of a small minority must not be allowed to undermine the broader fight against illegal mining, which she described as a persistent threat to the environment, public health, and national stability.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating this issue.
“As Ghanaians, we have a responsibility in protecting our environment. Let’s think of the future. The water we have here services the various communities around it. It does not belong to public officials. If you want to engage in mining, then you have to do it in a responsible way. No one is being prevented from engaging in mining, but we encourage people to do it the responsible way. We also encourage people to stay off our buffer zones. We cannot continue to destroy our water bodies through these illegal activities. We are in this together, and so let’s protect our water bodies and environment.”
The minister was accompanied by the deputy director-general of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in charge of operations, Hon. Teddy Safori Addi, alongside various NADMO officials and the District Chief Executive for Awutu Senya West. Upon arrival at the Kwayanko Water Works, the delegation was received by representatives from the Ghana Water Company.
During the visit, Hon. Teddy Safori Addi assured the public that NADMO remains dedicated to protecting water bodies across the country from the effects of illegal mining.
He further pledged that the organisation would maintain a close partnership with the Ministry to prevent further illegal mining activities within the district.
