The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has appealed to Ghanaians—particularly those residing in Accra—to remain patient with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as it carries out a significant transformer upgrade and replacement programme.
These ongoing works, he noted, are essential to enhancing the reliability of the electricity supply across the region.
The utility company is currently installing twelve new transformers across six primary substations situated in Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai Dzor, Baatsona, and Lashibi.
These critical upgrades will increase capacity from 26 MVA to 39 MVA, thereby improving load management and mitigating system overloads in rapidly developing communities.
Addressing journalists following an inspection of the installation works at the ECG Nungua District Office primary substation, Dr Jinapor explained that the repairs commenced following a comprehensive assessment of the distribution network.
This evaluation highlighted the cumulative impact of years of underinvestment, ageing infrastructure, and a lack of necessary network expansion.
Dr Jinapor further observed that the specific transformer being replaced had been in service for twenty-two years. Its replacement has become a necessity to meet the surging demand driven by the area’s growing population.
In tandem with these infrastructure improvements, the Minister urged ECG staff to enhance the quality of their work and adopt a more forward-thinking approach. He emphasised the need for accountability and high standards within the company’s leadership.
“If you are a district manager or a regional manager, we expect you to be proactive. Many of them are doing very good work, but we need to do more. I have asked the Managing Director to set key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive performance,” he said.
