Government increases allowances for Paramount Chiefs and Queen Mothers from GH₵1,000 to GH₵3,000

April 21, 2026
Ahmed

In a move to enhance the welfare of traditional leadership, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced a substantial increase in monthly allowances for paramount chiefs and queen mothers nationwide.

During his presentation at the Government Accountability Series on April 20, 2026, the Minister revealed that the monthly stipend has been raised from GH¢1,000 to GH¢3,000, effective as of 2025.

Minister Ibrahim highlighted that while traditional leaders had been receiving a flat rate of GH¢1,000 under the previous administration, the current government prioritised a review of these figures to reflect modern economic realities.

He noted that the adjustment followed a collaborative effort between his ministry and the Ministry of Finance to ensure the sustainability of the increase.

Expounding on the rationale behind the decision, the Minister emphasized the long period of stagnation that preceded this policy change.

“The ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, increased the allowance of paramount chiefs from GH¢1,000 to GH¢3,000. For the last eight years, our chiefs were stagnated in the allowance they were receiving. It was GH¢1,000, in 2025 he (the president) increased it by 300% and increased it by 300% for the paramount queen mothers,” he said.
