The Ghana Association of Assembly Members has confirmed that the government, through the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, has paid all 9,090 assembly members their full allowances for 2025, leaving no outstanding arrears for that period.
Mr Frank Nelson Ackah, the President of the Association, made this disclosure during an interview on Rainbow Radio’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem programme while responding to recent statements made by the sector minister, Ahmed Ibrahim.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, 20 April, the Minister revealed that assembly members received monthly allowances of GH₵1,300 from April to December 2025.
This followed a directive from President John Dramani Mahama approving the GH₵1,300 monthly rate, though statutory tax deductions reduced the net amount to slightly above GH₵1,000.
Mr Ackah noted, however, that no payments have been received since the start of 2026.
He explained that according to the current arrangements, members are paid on a quarterly basis and are therefore still awaiting the disbursement for the first quarter of 2026.
He added that through ongoing engagements, the Ministry has provided assurances that these payments for the current year will be processed soon.
During the interview, Mr Ackah stated that he could confirm the government does not owe any arrears from April to December 2025, as all outstanding payments for that year have been settled.
He reiterated that while 2025 is clear, the first quarter of 2026 remains unpaid, though the Association has followed up and been informed that the relevant authorities are working on the matter.
In addition to the discussion on allowances, Mr Ackah appealed to the government to expedite the procurement of motorbikes for assembly members.
He highlighted that members have been without these vehicles for the past three years, despite their critical importance in fulfilling mandates at the grassroots level.
Finally, while expressing appreciation to the government for delivering on its pledge to provide monthly allowances, he appealed for a further increase in the payment amount to better reflect the needs of the members.
