Cape Coast North MP Kwamena Minta Nyarku faults assembly over 24-hour market site, demands consultation

The Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North, Hon. Kwamena Minta Nyarku, has expressed displeasure over the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly’s handling of the proposed 24-Hour Market, saying he was not consulted on the choice of site before it was announced.

In a statement issued after receiving several calls to his office in recent days, Hon. Minta Nyarku said constituents have raised concerns about the decision to site the new market in the same part of the metropolis as the Kotokuraba Market.

“I wish to place on record that I was not consulted by the assembly on the selection of the site prior to this announcement,” the MP stated.

He noted that residents were surprised by both the announcement and the reasons given for the site selection.

Hon. Minta Nyarku said constituents are questioning why the next major market would be located in the South when the Kotokuraba Market — described as one of the biggest and most modern markets in the Central Region — already sits there.

“Concerns that the Kotokuraba Market, one of the biggest and most modern markets in the Central Region, currently sits in the South, and that our decision to site the next major market in the same part of the metropolis, are matters on which our constituents demand answers,” he said.

The Cape Coast North legislator criticised the Assembly’s posture in the media on the matter, stressing that Cape Coast North and Cape Coast South have historically worked in harmony.

“I am not pleased with the posture the Assembly has taken in the media on this matter. Cape Coast North and Cape Coast South have always worked in harmony, and that harmony is a strength we must continue to build on,” Hon. Minta Nyarku said.

Speaking on behalf of the people of Cape Coast, the MP called on the assembly to take the concerns seriously and reconsider its approach.

“On behalf of the people of Cape Coast, I am asking the assembly to take these concerns seriously, drop the posture it has taken in the media, and engage stakeholders properly,” he added.

The proposed 24-Hour Market is part of the government’s broader plan to boost nighttime economic activity in major cities. The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly is yet to officially respond to the MP’s statement.
