President John Dramani Mahama called on organised labour and the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to take a more proactive stance in safeguarding state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

The President emphasized that labour unions must not remain passive observers when governance failures arise.

If Torkonoo had secured ECOWAS victory, it would’ve been difficult to enforce in Ghana – Lawyer

Speaking at the 2026 May Day celebrations, he noted that silence in the face of poor management often serves as a precursor to institutional collapse and subsequent job losses.

President Mahama urged workers and their representatives to actively voice concerns and demand corrective measures whenever inefficiencies or irregularities are detected within public institutions.

He underscored the fact that the primary victims of corporate failure are the employees themselves, rather than the leadership. To drive this point home, he stated:

“I urge the TUC and organised labour not to sit back and look on aloof when management and governing boards are mismanaging their enterprises. Because when these enterprises collapse, it is the workers that suffer the most. And so when you see things going wrong, don’t sit aloof. Point it out and make sure corrections are done,” he said.
