Foreigners with shops and other businesses in SA being forced out, given seven days to leave – Ghanaian

Foreign nationals in South Africa are being forcibly evicted from their shops and issued a seven-day ultimatum to leave the country or face violent repercussions, according to Ghanaian national Agya Prince.

Agya Prince, popularly known as Kontonkyi, noted that xenophobic attacks have escalated to a point where foreigners with well-established enterprises are being systematically driven out of their premises.

Speaking in an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, he explained that these latest actions are not targeting Ghanaians alone but all non-South Africans currently residing in the country.

He further stated that this recent wave of hostility is being driven by groups of Zulus who reportedly have the backing of senior officials and politicians.

“Shops owned by foreigners are being forcefully taken by South Africans. They told the shop owners that these shops belong to them and that you have seven days to move out. They will decide the amount of money they will give you.”

According to his report, the area most severely affected by these developments is the Durban region.

Kontonkyi lamented that, given the current climate, it has become nearly impossible for foreigners to survive, especially now that the attackers appear to have political patronage.

He highlighted the logistical nightmare facing shop owners who also possess landed property.

Even if they chose to liquidate these assets, the process would take at least seven months, making it impossible to comply with the seven-day deadline imposed by the locals.

“What is happening is terrible and, at the moment, we don’t know exactly what to do. The Ghanaians, particularly, are wondering what they should do.”

He underscored the urgent need for South African officials to take immediate steps to address the crisis, lamenting that the government is rarely proactive and typically only intervenes after significant harm has already been inflicted.

“The police in South Africa watch on as foreigners are abused and attacked. It seems they are scared of the attackers, and so it has made it easier for them to attack us. If you are not careful, these South Africans can kill you easily. The Ghanaians have therefore been advised to stay humble and not engage with the South Africans.”

Kontonkyi concluded by stating that the attacks have not ceased; instead, they continue to move from province to province, depending largely on the level of police resistance encountered in each area.
