Veteran Ghanaian actor Fred Nii Amugi has shared a poignant account of the loss of his only daughter, who passed away at a remarkably young age.
The retired civil servant and celebrated screen icon noted that his daughter died in the prime of her youth, just nine days before her twenty-first birthday.
Speaking during an interview on the mid-morning drive on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Amugi reflected on this tragedy while discussing the support his family provided throughout his acting career.
He explained that his family deeply valued his craft, recognising it as the primary means of providing for the household.
He recalled how he had fostered an environment of understanding, ensuring they appreciated that his work was the foundation of their livelihood.
“My family was supportive,” he remarked. “In fact, we had a talk where I made them understand that this is what I do to help the house, so if you are not part of it, we cannot move on.”
He candidly added that while his wife did not take a keen interest in his acting career, his daughter was his most devoted companion.
“My wife was not the type to take an interest in what I did as an actor, and when I invited her to anything about acting, she would ask me to go alone. So my only daughter at the time was like, ‘Daddy, if Mum will not go, we will go.’ But I lost that daughter nine days to her 21st birthday through cancer. She was my daughter, my little girl, my wife, my girlfriend, my sidekick, my everything. Just name it. But God knows best.”
Despite this profound loss, Mr Amugi noted that his two sons have grown into successful individuals.
His eldest son is an architect, while his younger son has established himself as a fashion entrepreneur in the United States.
“Now I have two strong boys,” he said. “The first son is an architect who is married to an architect. The second told me he was not going to work for anyone but himself, and truly, he is an established fashion entrepreneur and is with his wife in the US. But the older one is here.”
Reflecting on the bond his daughter shared with her siblings, he fondly remembered her spirited personality, noting that “she was a thorn in their flesh, but they liked her for who she was.”
